Quantum Thinking

The word quantum is derived from Latin, meaning “how great” or “how much”

Do you want to grow your business in quantum leaps, beyond your wildest imagination, and achieve heights that you never thought possible?

If so, then read on.

I’ve been a motorcyclist for most of my life and have ridden thousands of miles across North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Europe. In short, I love the adventure and thrill of seeing the world on a bike. However, motorcycling is a dangerous sport and, as experienced as I am, there is always something new to learn. To that end, I still enjoy honing my skills by reading and taking advanced riding courses.

During one of my master skill training courses, we were required to speed up through a sharp turn with the purpose of understanding how a bike “behaves” under certain conditions. One thing is for sure; my motorcycle can do a lot more than me. While I may take a curve at, say 50 mph, there are many highly skilled riders that might take the same curve at 90 MPH.  In fact, there are probably some daredevils that might be willing to risk taking the same curve at over 100 mph. Take a look at speed racing and this will be obvious.

My point is this: I’m the limitation, not the motorcycle. In other words, the speed of the ride is determined by how the trainer communicates, my ability to apply the skills taught to me, my willingness to practice, and a positive mindset to move past my fear. In the absence of a good trainer and the skills needed to speed up my ride, I can try all I like but the likelihood of being successful without getting hurt is questionable. Now, I might have a positive attitude while trying harder, but that does not mean that I will be able to take the curve without getting hurt.

Most business owners and investors work in the mindset of always WANTING MORE. However, trying harder without motivating the people around them – together with a strategy – will be unlikely to result in quantum leap performance.

Regardless of your type of business or your current level of success, there is always room for “more”.

I have always been inspired by the theory of quantum thinking. However, our barriers to achieving quantum leap results are usually self-inflicted; like the motorcycle metaphor I used earlier, our businesses and employees are always capable of a lot more than we think or allow.

In my book, “The Bakers Dozen Rules for Highly Effective Business Operators”, I speak about “Don’t do the wrong thing more efficiently”.

There is no point in trying to sell more by discounting, promising more to your customers, or threatening your sales people and production employees. You need to change the way you DO business.

No matter how hard you work as an owner or a C-Level executive, you cannot do it alone. So…..

  • How can you inspire the people that work with you and for you?

  • How do you get them to operate above and beyond what they think is possible?

  • How do you reduce expensive attrition by keeping your people motivated?

  • How do you delegate and sleep well knowing the job will get done?

During the next series of blogs, I will share proven concepts that I’ve used when restructuring troubled companies, in addition to best practices that I’ve taught and learned while working with more than 20,000 business owners and C- Level executives of successful international companies.
